Words the industry uses loosely, made exact.

16 terms, each with where it is shown on this site and, where a standard defines it, which one.

  1. BCF (BIM Collaboration Format)The buildingSMART format for exchanging issues about a model, each with its viewpoint, between BIM tools.
  2. Boundary survey reportThe Land and Survey Department’s report for a plot: its boundary points as coordinates, its sides, any arc sides and its area.
  3. CDE (common data environment)The agreed source of information for a project, where every container moves through four states: work in progress, shared, published and archive.
  4. ClashA place where two elements of a model occupy the same space (a hard clash) or come closer than a set clearance (a clearance clash).
  5. Coordinated modelA model in which the disciplines have been checked against each other, and every clash is resolved or listed as open with its reason.
  6. EIR (exchange information requirements)The information requirements of an appointment: what the appointed party must deliver, when, and to what standard.
  7. Federated modelA model assembled from separate discipline models, such as architecture, structure and MEP, each kept by its author and viewed together.
  8. IFC (Industry Foundation Classes)The open schema for exchanging building information between software. IFC 4.3 is published as ISO 16739-1:2024.
  9. Information containerA named set of information, such as a model, a drawing or a schedule, stored, versioned and given a status as one unit.
  10. ISO 19650The international series on managing information over the life of a built asset using building information modelling, in six parts.
  11. LOD (level of development)How far a model element can be relied on: from a symbol (100) to measurable, as designed (300), to an as-built record (500).
  12. LOD 350An element modelled as designed, whose size, shape, location and orientation, and its interfaces with adjacent elements, can be measured.
  13. LOIN (level of information need)The geometry, information and documentation a given purpose needs, set out in ISO 7817-1:2024.
  14. SagittaThe height of an arc above its chord, at the middle. With the chord it gives the radius: R = (c²/4 + s²) / 2s.
  15. SetbackThe distance from a plot’s boundary within which building is not permitted, set by the municipality’s zoning for the plot.
  16. Status codeA code on a container that says what it may be used for, such as S1 suitable for coordination or S2 suitable for information.
